Kakuriyo Ramen @ Pulau Tikus (Jalan Burmah), Penang

When Penangites think of enjoying a comforting bowl of ramen—especially on a cold, rainy day—one name often comes to mind: Kakuriyo Ramen.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Pulau Tikus, this cozy ramen spot is located right beside Moulmein Rise Shoppes, near Pulau Tikus Market. Known for its rich, flavorful broths and delicious side dishes, Kakuriyo Ramen has become a favorite among locals seeking an authentic and satisfying ramen experience.

You can always see people sitting in front waiting for seats when it comes to meal hours, especially during dinner time. One of the reasons is also because they only have limited seats available in the restaurant.

The menu features a range of ramen choices for the ramen lovers. There are spicy and non spicy options as well as their signature dishes available. According to my friend, you can enjoy some authentic Japanese ramen flavours in their restaurant which is why their business is so good since their opening years ago.

Some sauce and condiments available in every table, diners can add according to their liking.

As a frequent visitor to Kakuriyo Ramen, I can confidently say that their ramen and chicken nanban never fail to impress. My top choice is always the Black Garlic Oil Ramen—perfect for those who enjoy bold, smoky flavors like I do. I highly recommend the Ramen (Black), which features a rich tonkotsu broth infused with aromatic garlic oil. For the ultimate experience, go for the Kuro Special, which comes loaded with a soft-boiled egg, four pieces of char siu, nori, black fungus, and spring onions.

If you have a big appetite like me, consider ordering a side of rice, or better yet, try their Mentaiko Rice Aburi (RM6.00). A pro tip: pour the rice into your leftover ramen broth—just like the Japanese do—to soak up every last drop of that delicious, flavorful soup. Not a single drop goes to waste!

Not forget to mention that the ramen was cooked to perfect, you can say that it is al dente, not too soft and not too hard, it was just perfect.

Miso Ramen priced at RM22.00 (Additional Aburi Charsiu at RM6.00)
Miso Ramen is also their best seller, one thing best about Kakuriyo Ramen is that you get to choose the salty level of your ramen, you can ask for a normal saltiness, less salty or you can also add the ramen sauce that is available on the table.

Tori Nanban is one of the must order for me, it is still my top favourite side dishes whenever I visit a Japanese restaurant. The Tori Nanban in Kakuriyo Ramen is just perfect to my liking, the chicken was juicy, tender and outer later was fried to perfection. Priced at RM16.00

Yaki Gyoza priced at RM13.50 for 5 pieces. I'm never a fan of Gyoza but I believe a lot of people would order this as it is one of the top side dishes no matter which restaurant you visit. Though it is just not my thing.

Kakuriyo Ramen is always filled with crowd, especially during weekends.
They do not take reservations, you gotta go early to avoid crowd if you have to. Nevertheless they are still one of the most popular ramen restaurant in Penang though they have been around for many years. Worth trying even if you are not a Penangite.
