Being one of the most popular mini supermarkets in Hong Kong. Mag Store has made it out from Hong Kong and opened their first outlet in Southeast Asia!
The first Mag Store Malaysia is located on the 5th floor of Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang. The store occupied a major space of Gurney Paragon Mall and it is located somewhere around the foodcourt.

It was the grand opening of Mag Store Malaysia on 29th November 2015 and I was invited to visit the store and also try out some of the snacks available at the store too.
Many thanks for Gurney Paragon Mall management for the invitation, it was an honour to witness the grand opening of the store.

If you are coming up from the escalators of the backdoor of Gurney Paragon Mall, you will first see Mag Store when you reach the 5th floor. The store is pretty huge and very visible.

Cafe Laurel @ Evergreen Laurel Hotel, Penang

Evergreen Laurel Hotel was once the most popular hotel that famous for its wide buffet spread and the good food that they were offering.
But in recent years, I have never heard of them anymore. It's like they have been gone from the buffet listing for a very long time.

Recently I've received an invitation to Cafe Laurel @ Evergreen Laurel Hotel and I was told that they have recently renovated the place to become better and ready to feed all the "tamchiak" Penangnites again.

Many thanks to Evergreen Laurel Hotel Penang for hosted us that night.

Standing tall as one of the oldest hotel in Penang, Evergreen Laurel Hotel Penang is still popular in and attracts a lot of visitors every year with its best room promotions and its well known quality buffet.

59sixty @ KOMTAR Penang

Being the tallest building in Penang and also the 6th tallest building in Malaysia, KOMTAR stands tall at the heart of George Town, Penang and recently renovated the top floors to expand it into F&B & leisure businesses.
In my memory, I remember it was once called the  云中阁餐厅 located on the 58th and 59th floor of Komtar if I'm not mistaken. It used to be one of the most popular restaurant in Penang and also one favourite restaurant for wedding.

59sixty has taken over the slots and  reopened their business in the mid of this year and I know that the feedback was very bad due to the bad service and bad food.
To clear its bad name, 59sixty has recently brought over a new chef from New Zealand.

Chef Jason Hall from New Zealand recently joined 59sixty as executive chef to bring back the reputation of 59sixty. He has got 25years of culinary experience and previously worked in many of the big hotels like Sheraton group and some other well known restaurants in London and New Zealand specialized in western & seafood. He is good in developing all sorts of cooking for seafood and focus on new culinary skills for seafood.

KOTA Dine & Coffee, When Francis Meets Rempah @ Fort Cornwallis Penang

There are so many creative ideas came up in Penang.
Recently, I've seen some people posted up about a restaurant named KOTA.
The name itself have attracted me, KOTA is referring to Fort in Malay language.
But when I found out the full name of the restaurant was KOTA Dine & Coffee, When Francis Meets Rempah, that's when I thought this cafe is really something special. Rempah is actually referring to spices & herbs in Malay language, which indicates that the whole concept of the cafe would be referring to dishes that prepared with herbs and spices.

KOTA, When Francis Meets Rempah is located INSDE of Fort Cornwallis, one of the biggest fort in Malaysia that still standing in Penang. It is also one of the historical building that attracted a lot of visitors daily.
It was built in the late 18th century in Penang that was initially planned to protect Penang from pirates and Kedah. But in the end, the fort was never engaged in the battle.
It is located at the northeast of Penang, which is somewhere near the Penang Jetty.

Fort Cornwallis is still standing and now a popular tourist attraction in Penang

Halloween Buffet Dinner @ J-Garden Dining Restaurant, Penang Bay Avenue

Being one of the extraordinary restaurants, J-Garden Dining Restaurant serves Western style Japanese food instead of the typical Japanese food in Penang. In short, it is known as Japanese's western food.

J-Garden is located at Bay Avenue, one of the busiest areas around Bayan Baru near Queensbay Mall. Instead of the authentic or traditional Japanese cuisine, J-Garden go for Western Japanese cuisine instead to attract different crowd to their restaurant. The location of J-Garden is not visible from the main road because it is off Persiaran Bayan Indah, you will find it right behind Eastin Hotel.

If you were to head to Eastin Hotel, you will be able to see J-Garden located on your left.

PG Gold Museum (Public Gold) @ Bishop Street, Penang

Being the one and only GOLD museum in Penang, Public Gold Museum is now opened at Bishop Street, Penang. One of the busiest street during the weekdays at George Town area.
This museum is located right next a Public Bank branch, where they will have Public Gold trades during weekdays while the museum will be opened everyday including Public Holidays.

It was a fine Sunday afternoon that the famous blogger Valyn Lim from www.valynlim.com came to find me for lunch. And it so happens that I was planning to visit this Gold Museum on that day itself, so in the end I pulled Valyn Lim to join me along for the museum tour.

PG Gold Museum is rather visible along Bishop Street, if you are standing at the side of St.George's Church, you will be able to see the museum within your sight.

The museum opened up somewhere in January 2015 hence it pretty fresh to the locals and also foreigners if you have not visit Penang for quite some time. During weekdays, the building will be busy doing gold trades for all the investors who invested in Public Gold fund, while the museum is opened daily from 9:00am to 6:00pm including Public Holidays

Orient Fitness Gold @ Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang

My blog is always about food and eating all around Penang.
Sometimes I do get very health-concerned and my friends do asked me how do I maintain my health and body even I am a big appetite person and I eat so much.
My answers are all the same, go to the gym, workout  harder.
The more I eat, the harder I workout, the longer time I spent at the gym.

Not many big fitness centre in Penang that could offer good pricing and comes with wide range of equipments and fitness classes, but Orient Fitness do.
Orient Fitness Gold is one of the latest fitness centres that popped up in Penang. It is located at one of the most iconic shopping malls in Penang, Gurney Paragon Mall.

As one of the biggest tenants of Gurney Paragon Mall, Orient Fitness Gold has taken up quite some space of the mall located on the 6th floor, other tenants on the same floor would be Sushi Zanmai, Pasta Zanmai, Brown Pocket and many more.

A picture taken during the Grand Opening, and I dropped by to look around.

Koay Teow Th'ng @ Lebuh Melayu, Penang

Being one of the Kochabi in Penang, this Koay Teow Th'ng stall has been selling Koay Teow Soup around the neighborhood for thirty over years at Lebuh Pantai (Beach Street) off the junction of Lebuh Melayu.

Recommended by the famous food blogger CK Lam from www.what2seeonline.com/
I was eager to try it out for quite some time as I'm someone who is really into hawker food in Penang. I have also drove passed this stall for many times before I have finally tried it myself.

A photo posted by JJ Jason™ (@jjzai) on

I've order a bowl of Koay Teow Soup (Large) for RM4.00 and another bowl was mixed innards (chicken gizzard, pork intestines) and some blanched choy sum for another RM3.70. The total was RM7.70 and I was really full as the portion was really big.
One big focus would be the comfort broth that boiled with chicken and pork bones that made it tasted rather rich and flavorful. The fragrant garlic oil, fried garlic and lards are also some of the important ingredients that made up this bowl of delicious koay teow soup, you may consider to ask for more lards if you are one lard lovers like me. But please be moderate on taking lards for health purpose.

There are so many hidden eateries in Penang that made this state so special. This stall is only one of the many. Despite being hidden in one of the most quiet street in Penang, this stall is still full of customers even late at night. You may consider coming to this place for dinner or supper.

Pink Elephant Ice Cream @ Queensbay Mall Penang

I still remember when I saw some of these interesting videos on Facebook and I'm really attracted to this Fried Ice Cream, which is one of the famous Thai desserts that I have been looking for.

And then I was hoping that I can find it when I go to Hat Yai during May 2015.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find any stalls selling the fried ice cream despite I was there searching for 4 days.
In the end, I was back with disappointment as people kept telling me that I should have that fried ice cream thingy if I were to go to Thailand.

Recently, I've heard that Queensbay Mall has opened up a rather interesting stall selling special kind of ice cream.
At first I thought it was just some kind of ordinary ice cream that selling rather common ice cream, or it could be special with some different flavours or what.
What really surprised me was when I found that that they are selling Fried Ice Cream
And it's from Thailand! That got me rather excited and desperate to try it out!

The O'lives Restaurant @ Lintang Burma, Pulau Tikus Penang

Hidden at one of the quiet streets in Pulau Tikus area, The O'lives Restaurant has opened its business for a year plus and I have never realized it until Chloe told me.
Located 2 doors next to The Wine Shop, The O'lives Restaurant is a semi-fine dining restaurant featuring unique western cuisine specially crafted by the chef to bring out the best from what they have.
All photos were taken with Chloe's camera as I forgot my memory card AGAIN!
The exterior of The O'lives is rather simple yet elegant with dark green colour, I kinda like this colour but I wonder why I never really notice about this restaurant before this.

Kimagination @ Odeon Penang, Jalan Penang, George Town

Kimagination, combination of the word Kim and Imagination.
The word Kim is from Master Kim Jung Gi, the one and the most important part of Odeon Penang Interactive Museum.

Odeon Penang is located at Penang Road, where it was formerly Odeon Cinema. It was opened in year 1921 and have survived in Penang for nearly a decade. I still remember how Odeon was when I was a kid, which I personally visited this cinema many times before Golden Screen Cinema, TGV even exist in Penang.

I have personally visited Made In Penang the 3D art museum, which I think it is kinda interesting with 3D arts, only thing I don't like was the museum was too little art pieces for the price that we paid hence I think it was a bit costly.
Being an interactive museum, Odeon Penang is slightly some combination of Upside Down arts and Interactive comic arts. So let me bring you for a tour at the museum!

Odeon is still located at the same location where it used to be, but the old building have been restored and refurbished. Looking rather new but yet maintains the old outlook despite they have shifted their business from cinema to museum.

Ghost Museum Penang @ Lebuh Melayu, George Town Penang

It's been a while since I last visited all these attractions in Penang though I've seen so many of them coming up so attractive and fun.

Penang Ghost Museum is one of the latest attractions in Penang featuring the horror and myth of all evils and ghosts especially legend stories in Malaysia.
For some gorehound(Someone who fancy gore stuff) like me, I'm definitely attracted to the theme of the museum seeing so many pictures on their Facebook page and also pictures uploaded by friends.

My friend Nick came from KL so I have finally got the excuse chance to visit the popular Penang Ghost Museum during August.
Penang Ghost Museum is located at one of the less busy street of George Town, which is known as Lebuh Melayu. This whole street has fully occupied with local shops or some abandoned houses so Penang Ghost Museum is rather stand out on this street.

Looking at the building itself we can see that the museum is not very big, and it is also part of the Unesco World Heritage Building.

Time Capsule Hotel @ Chulia Street Penang

Capsule concept hotel is no longer fresh to the public.
I bet most of you have heard it before knowing that it is one of the best concept hotel in Japan.
Knowing that it is one of the best concept, the locals are now bringing the this whole new and trendy concept into Malaysia!

Time Capsule Hotel is the first capsule hotel in Penang.
Located at the heart of George Town, Chulia Street is also one of the most happening streets for tourists. It is the street where most tourists meet up and make friends meeting travellers from other countries. There are quite a number of attractions and also pubs & bars located on the streets or all around the hotel within walking distance.

The building itself located at Chulia Street is kinda stand out compared to other hotels around the area, so it can be easily spotted as long as you have found the right street.

Snowflake @ Sunway Pyramid, Kuala Lumpur

I do have to admit that sometimes I'm quite a sweet tooth myself and got rather strong craving towards sweet stuff.

Whenever I visit Kuala Lumpur, first dessert that came into my mind would be Snowflakes.
It has never disappoint me with their mouthwatering Green Tea Ice and Soya Bean Ice.
Both flavours are my favourite and it goes with your preferred toppings. Whether you go for the sets choices of Green Tea, Mango, Soya Bean, and many more choices.

They have seasonal flavours like Durian, and all time favourited like Black Sesame as well.
I really can't wait for this brand to come into Penang, but it is just waiting for all these years.

Antipodean @ Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur

Antipodean's Big Breakfast is one of the best big breakfast I've ever tried in KL.
I believe there are good ones all around KL but I have yet to discover, so this would be the one that I like the most. Not forget to mention that they also serve very good coffee.

I personally like their perfect scrambled eggs that cooked to perfection. Unlike fully cooked scramble eggs like what other cafes would serve. It is also rare to find the real pork bacons in breakfast in KL as what my friends told me. So pricing at only RM 22.00 for this big portion would be rather reasonable.

The other plate shows Egg Benedict with Bacon. It comes with perfectly poached eggs and the delicious Hollandaise sauce. That is how a plate of Egg Benedict should be, not fully cooked eggs nor funny sides on the plate. Priced at RM 24.00, consider a bit pricey and I would prefer if they were to make the portion of the salad bigger.

Fun of Baking @ Totoro Gourmet Studio, Kuala Lumpur

It is rather fun and exciting when it comes to baking.
I'm something rather into cooking and it's been year since I last baked.
I was rather happy when I am able to join my friend for a baking class in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

Totoro Gourmet Studio is a well known pastry studio in KL famous for its one-to-one baking classes.
As far as I've visited so many bakery, Totoro Gourmet Studio is also the one of the most innovative and creative cake designs and decorations skills.
All the cake designs are rather unique but also clean at the same time. My friend, Nick himself is rather particular on baking which has made him a master baker now.

I was surprised to be served a slice of specially made cake by Chef Nick.
The picture below is Salted Egg Yolk Cheesecake, which was named as Ultraman Cheesecake by Chef Nick too. It was rather rich and delicious as the saltiness and sweetness from salted egg yolk and cheesecake blended together. It forms a rather appetizing dessert instead.

Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle @ Ping Hooi Cafe, Carnavon Street Penang.

People who knows me will definitely know that I'm a big fan of Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle.
When it comes to Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle, what I emphasize would be the prawn broth that must taste rich and fishy enough in order to meet my liking.

By coincident, I've ordered this Prawn Noodle at Ping Hooi Cafe when I was having breakfast with my boss. Having to see that the price is rather reasonable, I've ordered a big portion and further added some pork ribs into my bowl of noodle.

Ping Hooi Cafe is where the famous Tiger Char Koay Teow is located. It is in the mid of Carnavon Street, where it used to be one of the busiest street in Penang famous for trading and wholesaling.
The cafe can be easily spotted as it is just ride beside the main road of Carnavon Street.

This large portion of Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle is only priced at RM6.00 with additional pork ribs added. The taste of its soup and the mixture of all ingredients was just perfect to my liking. And after my first sip on the soup, I was totally in love with it. Since then it became my favourite place for breakfast.

Milkcow Soft Serve Ice Cream @ Sunway Pyramid Mall, Kuala Lumpur

After my recent visit to Honey Creme and my comments.
I've got quite a number of suggestions saying that Milkcow Soft Serve Ice Cream is better than Honey Creme's.
If you have not read about my experience with Honey Creme, you may revisit my post at http://www.jjzai.com/2015/07/opening-of-honey-creme-soft-ice-cream.html

After quite some time, I've finally visited Milkcow during my recent trip to Kuala Lumpur as Milkcow is only available in there.
I've visited the Sunway Pyramid's outlet, it is a stall located in one of the busy corner in the middle of the mall.
Milkcow's Ice Cream is rather smooth and it is less sweet if I were to compare it to Honey Creme's Ice Cream. But for the honeycomb itself, I would still prefer the one in Honey Creme as it is much crispier than the one in Milkcow.
The ice cream in Milkcow is not as milky compared to Honey Creme as well. Which would be great if you are not so much into dairy products and if you are afraid of the smell.

One thing I must focus here about Milkcow @ Sunway Pyramid Mall is the service of the staff.
Despite being so busy due to weekends, all the staffs were really friendly and providing quick service even though there were a lot of customers. They did not forget to put a smile on their faces, which I think it eventually cheered up their customers as well.
It is really a thumb up for this kind of good services they gave. I myself felt really great being there as a customer. It is the kind of services that everybody will expect.

Opening of The X-clusive Restaurant & Bar @ Straits Quay, Penang

I still remember how relaxed it was when I sat at Library Restaurant & Bar drinking some ice cold beer with some delicious snacks.
It is such a pain to hear that Library has ceased their operation since then I couldn't find a good replacement for a place to hang out with some pretty nice seaview.

Recently, my friend have invited me over to the opening of a new restaurant & bar outlet.
The X-clusive Restaurant & Bar is the one that took over the slot that used to be Library Restaurant & Bar. Now it has been changed to a total new place offering new menu.
The X-clusive Restaurant & Bar is one ideal location for drinking, especially if you really enjoy sea breeze with some ice cold beer serving on your table.

I've attended the opening of The X-clusive and find that the place was still as comfy as how it used to be. I believe it will be a great new place to hang out again.

Seafood Steamboat Set @ Sarkies Corner, E&O Hotel Penang

It is always been buffet buffet and more buffet whenever I visit Eastern & Oriental Hotel.
But anyway, E&O Hotel in Penang is also well known for their quality buffet with the most wide variety of food available on the buffet spread.

This time, I was a little bit surprise that E&O Hotel has came up with Seafood Steamboat Set as their latest promotions in Sarkies Corner!

Sarkies Corner was the previous buffet outlet that I was here when I was small and I still remember every each corner serving different food.
It was rather luxurious to be able to dine at this gorgeous hotel that age 130 years old this year. It kinda reminds me of my childhood with my family members, especially some who are no longer around.

E&O Hotel is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year.
The building is still as glory and charm like the older days, you can still have a strong feeling of colonial style whenever you step into the hotel.

Tailor-made Clothes @ Parmanands Tailor, Batu Ferringhi, Penang.

When it comes to our work suits, it is very difficult to find the right size for our body shape.
Yet, tailor made clothes are usually very expensive and it takes them very long time to prepare your clothes.

Back in the 90's, Parmanands Tailor is very well known for their tailor made clothes especially suits, tuxedo and many more. Mainly because of their great tailor skills that comes with affordable prices.
They were once the main tailor for Penang well known 5-star hotel uniforms until they expanded their business and moved out from the hotel.

Parmanands Tailor has relocated to Batu Ferringhi area right opposite Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa. You can easily spot the shop if you are driving along Jalan Batu Ferringhi as that's the only way to Batu Ferringhi Beach. If you are coming from town area, just carefully look to your left.

Chai Diam Ma @ Lebuh Queen, Penang

Located at one of the hidden corner of Unesco Heritage Site, Chai Diam Ma is a hidden gem situated at Lebuh Queen (Queen Street) for many years without people realizing.

I've passed by this place quite often last time but never visit before. The word "Chai Diam Ma" means grocery store in Hokkien language which is rather Penang and classic. It is commonly seen in the 90s before all these Tesco, Aeon and other big hypermarkets exist in Penang.

Chai Diam Ma is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town. The exterior of the building can be easily identify as one also. From the wooden windows to the classic metal door, you can see a big sign written "Chai Diam Ma" - Cafe - Handmade -

Road Side Fish Head Bihun & Tom Yam Seafood Variety @ Jalan Bagan Jermal, Penang

If you are the type who are in love with hot and spicy soup like Tom Yam, Fish Meat Bihun and the sorts of pick, cook and pay kind of noodles, then you definitely will be interested in this post.

I've heard about this place opened and replaced the previous western food place. Then changed to a pretty common restaurant selling Fish Bihun. Then it didn't attract me at all.
One day, when I was looking for dinner with friends, I noticed it when I drove passed this place and finally entered this restaurant.
Road Side Fish Head Bihun & Tomyam Seafood Variety is located directly opposite St.Nicholas Home at Jalan Bagan Jermal. It can be easily spotted as it is located at the road side along Jalan Bagan Jermal.

The moment I entered the restaurant, I can smell a good aroma of sourish Tom Yam that instantly stirred up my appetite. They offered variety of different dishes from porridge, noodles, fried rice and many more.
Soup selections are milk broth, Tomyam soup or clear soup.
Noodle selections are like vermicelli, yellow noodle, instant noodle, porridge and many more.

I would say that the milk broth are rather milky and delicious. The combination of ginger, tomatoes, salted vegetable made the soup itself tasted rather appetizing and the richness of the milk soup went went with the combination and the fried fish was very fresh.

I ordered myself a bowl of Tomyam Yee Mee with quite a variety of ingredients selected from the tray. This big bowl of delicious Tomyam cost me only RM16.00 which I think it is fairly cheap if you were to compare to other stalls out there. I asked for less spicy tomyam soup so the spiciness was rather moderate, and the sourness of the soup is just perfect. I love how thick the tomyam soup was and I really fell in love with this dish from my first sip of the soup.

If you are a big fan of tomyam, you should really give this restaurant a hit.
I'm sure you will fall in love with it!
