HELP SECURE A FUTURE FOR OVER 700 RESCUED DOGS IN PENANG

4PAWS launches fundraising initiative to build a permanent shelter after 15 years of rescue work

After 15 years of rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming

abandoned and abused dogs, 4PAWS Penang is moving into its next phase with a

fundraising initiative to build a permanent shelter.

The effort comes as the organisation seeks to transition from a temporary, rental-based

setup into a purpose-built facility that can support its growing number of rescued animals

and long-term operations.

A Milestone That Signals the Next Step

In conjunction with its 15th anniversary, 4PAWS will host a Fundraising Dinner on 6 June

2026 at the Grand Ballroom, Berjaya Penang Hotel. The event is expected to bring

together supporters, corporates and members of the public for an evening of community

engagement and fundraising.

Tickets are priced at RM180 per person, with proceeds directed towards land acquisition

and the development of a permanent shelter.

For over a decade, 4PAWS has relied on volunteer support to carry out rescue operations

across Penang, providing medical treatment, rehabilitation and rehoming for abandoned

and vulnerable dogs.

Moving Towards a Permanent Home

Currently operating from rented land in Teluk Bahang, the organisation faces ongoing

challenges associated with temporary infrastructure, including maintenance costs and

limitations in expanding its capacity.

“Our focus now is on building something that can support our work long-term,” said

Barbara Janssen, founder of 4PAWS Penang. “A permanent shelter will allow us to provide

better care, improve our facilities and continue rescuing dogs in a more sustainable way.”

The organisation has identified a potential site for development and is working towards

securing the necessary funds to move forward. The planned shelter will include secure

kennels, sanitation areas, veterinary treatment and rehabilitation spaces, as well as

exercise zones and a dedicated adoption and community engagement centre.

Fundraising Through Community Support

The upcoming dinner will feature a buffet spread alongside fundraising activities such as

an auction and lucky draw. In addition to individual ticket sales, 4PAWS is inviting

corporate participation through sponsorship packages ranging from RM1,500 to

RM5,000, as well as in-kind contributions.

Funds raised will be allocated towards land purchase, legal costs and the construction

of essential shelter infrastructure.

Supporting a Broader Animal Welfare Effort

Beyond the immediate fundraising goal, the initiative reflects a broader need for

sustainable animal welfare infrastructure in Penang, where land availability and rising

costs continue to impact rescue organisations.

“This initiative is about strengthening what we have built over the past 15 years,” Janssen

added. “With the right support, we can continue providing care and finding homes for

dogs that need it.”
